Plot: American backpackers are lured into a Slovakian hostel and find themselves in the middle of a human trafficking ring. Being a big horror fan I was excited about the release of this movie. It was suppose to be very graphic and disturbing so I took a long lunch and went to see it on Friday. The movie started our slow, portrayed the Americans as over sexed under intelligent baboons and every other word out of their mouths was the F bomb. Acting was poor but there was some good T&A so that was a plus. The first half of the movie was the same thing; F bombs, drinking and disc. When it did finally get to the gore it wasn’t anything special. Nothing suspenseful, the special effects sucked and it wasn’t until the last 5 minutes did it finally start to get good. Without giving any spoilers away I’m going to recommend that the horror fans wait until it comes out on DVD…which should be VERY soon. |
It was amazing. To compare it to the other very brutal gore film Saw and Saw 2, Hostel was alot less sleazy. Hostel had a more proffesional direction as most of the gory scenes were not what you saw happening, just the aftermath. The horror in Hostel worked much better as a psychological terror to the audience by just giving them glimpses of the gore and then making your imagination go wild, as Saw just wanted to force you to look at what was happening. It was not a cheaply-done gore film, the second half of the movie was definitely better than the first. I give it 4.5/5 stars just because I think they really just over did it on the sex in the first half of the film. barely a spoiler: |

I liked the movie but it really wasn't a gore/horror film. It had some gorey spots but nothing new. As other said the first half has some very nice T&A and the last 10 minutes were definately the best part of the movie. If they could have made the whole movie like the last 10 minutes it would have been awesome. I do have to disagree that it portrayed American's as over sexed and dumb. It was the characters from the other countries always screwing. The 2 American's got laid the least of anyone. It was also the other characters that usually dropped the F bomb. It does look like the American "cowboy" attitude was added...but that's what made the last part of the film so great...guns and car chases. |

Tarantino didnt do shit except slap his name on it and help produce. Eli Roth did all of the directing. They just put the Tarantino tag on it to get more people to see it, as many might be apprehensive of going to a Roth movie after the failure that was Cabin Fever. Its an Eli Roth movie. |
Well, that makes sense, cuz it was definitely Cabin Feverish(kinda not that great) in nature. |

The first hour was excrutiatingly dull (except, of course, for Natalya and Svetlana). Then it started getting sick to the point where I began asking myself, "Why would anyone want to make a movie like this, and why would anyone actually want to see it?" Oddly enough, I'm beginning to like it more in retrospect and the answer to my questions is that I'm just getting frakking old. |
He could hear her screaming and she was the girl that he was talking to in the Hostel. If he thought he had enough time to storm the entire complex searching for clearly deranged fucks I am sure he would have, but he could only find her. |
Ah yeah! I didn't put that together before I went to see it but it makes sense now. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was okay and I enjoyed it like I do all horror movies but I would have preferred to rent it or buy it on DVD than to see it in the theater. |
