I watched this last night with the gf last night. Needless to say.... it was quite an odd film. From what I know, most anime fans own this movie but I would actually recommend it for general watchers. I didn't think it was as good as Heavy Metal, but still a good movie to watch if you like cartoon flicks.

Naah. The storyline is pretty weak. But I would say the
visuals are simply awesome. Akira, like the GitS movie,
is a good example of style over substance.

Tetsuuuooooooooooo!

Eh, anime is no fun unless it involves multiple prehensile penises and tied up schoolgirls.

Kinda weird, but I own it, and I hate anime.

Agreed. Demons raping school girls... nothing in modern day animated cinema can match that or even come close.

Repaired to its correct state.

You need to watch more anime apparently.

It was one of the first Anime's i watched. Primarily because of the graphics. Very impressed then - watched it a few years back.

Some other Anime titles with way cool graphics are AppleSeed and Ghost in the Shell.

As always, the story lines are a bit "complicated". But the graphics are great!

Check out the "tank" with the mini-gun scene in AppleSeed.

Gasaraki Is a decent one for the art. I never watched the whole thing... it was subbed and I hate reading subs.

The Mechs in this one were pretty cool and a little more believable than say something like Neon Genesis, which is cool in its own right.

Vampire Hunter D was cool, although I think it's a little dated now. The sequel sucked, much like the follow-ups to Ghost in the Shell.

Akira was cool, but I've seen it so many times I'm pretty well sick of it.

I always like the Guyver series of anime cartoons. More a TV show than a movie.

Seems like Anime is really getting played out now that that manga style of art is used in so much of what you see on Cartoon Network and such.

You said it Path. It is the graphics / artwork that usually catches my eye. Reading through the subs on the sometimes "far out" story lines can be an effort.

I got to watch Vampire Hunter when i got one for the wifeys nephew. The storyline was more "normal" and understandable. I bought him this other one ... can't recall the title but it was something like a "samurai" flick. Not Samurai X. Got really surprised when they had an ugly dude raping a sexy girl on it! . Told the wifey to be sure to warn the mom of the nephew about the x scenes!

Yup! That's the one.

I will check that out.

Just watched AppleSeed again. Really great graphics and artists concept of the guns, robots and especially the C130 cum osprey.

For some reason I remember renting Appleseed and not liking it all that much... unless I'm thinking of a nother one that looked similar to it by the box art.

I never actually saw Ninja Scroll. I'll have to see what kind of depraved anime movie Netflix has.

There's the 1980's Appleseed with crappier animation, and the 2004 one with vastly improved animation.

Ninja scroll is pretty funny.

I think I saw the 80's one then because I saw it in like 94 or so. Yeah, I seem to recall it being a letdown because the box art was pretty awesome but the actual animation art was fairly lame.

Doesn't the newer version have a lot of computer animation in it?

The new one is mostly CGI including the characters.
It is anime in name only...

Back in high school I let my 10th grade government teacher barrow my copy of Akira. After he watched it he decided to show it to his classes. I remember at the part where they light that guy up using L85's all the the girls in the class made this funny eek noise all at the same time I cant remember why exactly he wanted to show it anyway eehh oh well

Ok ... now I get it. I always simply associated Japanese Cartoons for ANIME. Now that i've read its "history", I now understand that the term "anime" is more of a description of the style or method of the animation.

And to answer Path's question .... Yes, it was CGI.

Yeah. I've never been an animation "purist" when it comes
to CGI, but I really prefer hand/computer drawn cell animation
over full-fledged CGI. It is much less jarring to see a less
detailed drawn animation vs a CGI that tries to look photo
realistic (and fails).

It was a good show, however!
