Is it possible to record shows and movies onto the receiver and then take the receiver to another house and watch the recording even if the second house does not have any satellite at all?

I would think so. As I understand it the programs are recorded to the receiver. Hence the reason you can still watch the stuff on the DVR even if your satellite is out.

Yes it will work. Use caution in transporting it to avoid damaging the hard drive.

Cool. That means I don't have to get a whole new subscription for myself. I can just leave my receiver at my parent's house and then get it a couple days a week.

Disconnect the satellite feeds and see if it works. Some receivers require a sat signal before they will play back anything.
