What a great flick.  After it was over, my wife and I were discussing why it is not on every TV station in America, instead of the drivel they always play.

Easily one of my favorites.  The dialogue and writing in that movie was so realistic

Just like HEAT, I loved the sound of the gunshots.

Especially when he cuts loose with the 12 gauge in the bar.

Only mistake I remember is in the final shootout I think Kevin C got 10+ shots out of his revolver.

There was a "guy flies through the air" after being shot with a shotgun scene, but other than that it was a great movie.

Yes, we both laughed out loud at that.  It was so eggregious, even my wife picked up on it and commented about it.  Then, we laughed.

Beautifully photographed movie.  Costner did a good job as the no=nonsense gunman:

Charley Waite: "Are you the one that shot our friend?"

Laughing Bad Guy: "Yeah and I enjoyed it too....[glances away and then back...]"

Charley Waite:  BOOM!

Costner should only be allowed to play cowboys.

In the "making of" or commentary, Costner said he purposefully amplified the shotgun blast relative to the rest of the audio to grab people's attention. And he also felt obligated to put a "fanning" a revolver scene to make it a "real" western".

Well done movie.

Fanning revolvers should be banned from all subsequent westerns.

This is an unheralded movie.  One of several westerns which brought the genre back from near extinction.  In the 60's and 70's , Hollywood had turned westerns into schmaltzy soap operas.  The movies really sucked and I quit watching anything that was western-based.

Unforgiven, Open Range, Quigley, Silverado, Crossfire Trail and several others are really good, even great movies which surpass almost everything ever previously done by Hollywood.

What are some other great cowboy movies?

Lonesome Dove and Broken Trail are good if you like Robert Duvall.  I enjoyed them myself.  I like Selleck's "Monte Walsh" and "Last Stand at Saber River"  and of course throw in Sam Elliot with "The Sacketts."

Open Range in my opinion was a rebirth needed for the Western Movie Genre.

Some really great movies that folks don't know about.

Open Range

Broken Trail

Crossfire Trail (Tom Selleck)

Monte Walsh (Tom Selleck)

Last Stand at Sable River (Tom Selleck)

Hell... it's because of Open Range that the remake of 3:10 to Yuma was made along with Appaloosa and the remake of True Grit.

Of course one could argue that without Lonesome Dove and Unforgiven, Open Range would have never gotten made.

I do agree with Lonesome Dove. Unforgiven is good but I also think that it was trying to stay with the older format and style.

Probably my favorite western of the modern era.  Although I did see Tombstone for the first time recently and thought that was excellent too.

If you like Robert Duvall check out Secondhand Lions.

When I was a kid I used to despise Robert Duvall.  If he was in it, I wouldn't watch the movie*.  Then, in about 1980, I saw "The Great Santini".  This was followed by "Tender Mercies".  Since then, he has done so many great movies, I don't seek him out but everything he does has been great.

*  Except that he played Boo Radley in "To Kill A Mockingbird".

They cut out the footage when he does the running reload to get that many rounds off. He was sorely pissed since he had practiced to get the reload down to a time that would rank in the cowboy action shooting games.

I liked Postman.  It is on its way to me from Netflix, right now.
