I have a 1984 K5 Blazer with 305cid, 700r tranny and I believe chain Transfer case.

I hadnt driven my truck in 4x4 in months so I took it out to mess with it. Going to 4hi is no biggie. when I stopped the truck, put it in Neutral and went to put it in 4lo, it kind of was grinding. I was pretty easy putting it in the gear. Now if I move from 4hi to 4 lo deliberately with some force and one swift motion it is fine, but if I try to baby it in, it catches gears and kinda grinds.

So, is it just me or is there a problem?

Yes, your transfer case (NP 208) is chain driven.

Check the level and condition of tranny fluid in the transfer case. Try shifting the transfer case while in Park instead of Neutral. If it isn't jerking or you don't hear chain slap while in 4WD, it's probably just normal wear.

There is probably a seal between the trans and xfer case, check the level in the xfer also. They are known to wear some, the chain stretches. Even if you needed to swap in a new one, it's a very easy project and they are out there by the dozen.

NP208 2.7:1 low range, chain driven, takes ATF

Pretty normal given age and mileage.
