Have a Rav4 with stock 235/55/R18 sized tires.  They are street tires and have performed miserably in the mud for this little 4wd.

Would like to switch over to some LT265/65R18/E BFGoodrich all terrain tires, but this is the smallest 18inch tire they offer

that or any other "offroad" tire that would fit on a small SUV.  Tire clearance will be an issue so I'm limited in options I think.  After talking to a few shops, I'm getting conflicting answers on what will fit and what happens if I order some (they never have anything in that style/size) and they don't fit.

The BFG AT KO is a good all around all terrain tire, but they clog pretty easily in the mud.  I have a set of Bridgestone Revos on my truck, they seem to be about equal to the BFG's off road, but they are also not ideal in the mud.  The Revo 2 is available in 255/70R18 which may suit your needs.

FYI, my next set of tires will be the Toyo Open Country M/T or something similar.  Not to beat a dead horse, but most all terrain tires are not that great in the mud.

And very few, if any, mud or A/T tires are going to fit on a CRV. Even if they do, they are going to weigh 4 times what the stock all seasons weight, will kill mileage, acceleration, braking, and destroy the suspension components with the additional unsprung weight.

A CRV is not made for mud or off road use, and is never going to work well at it.

That's a very good point.  I mistakenly thought the OP had an FJ Cruiser.  I agree a Rav4 or CRV will never be ideal in the mud and true MT tires are overkill for one of those SUV's.

Not looking to turn my Rav into Bigfoot, but need something that can handle the mud better at the range I shoot at.  I've had a couple close calls with the current yoko's that came stock and i'm looking for suggestions.

Firestone Destination AT's. Had them on my Taco for about 1.5 yrs and I have been very happy with them.

I have been doing some searching in close to that size range, and there isn't much. The only thing I have found so far that is even rated as anything other than a highway passenger car tire is the Yoko Geolandar A/T-S in size 225/55/18. They look like a very mild A/T, and aren't going to work well in the mud, but they have to be better than whatever you have now.

In mud, momentum and the skinny pedal are your friends. Remember to air down, also.

Are you sure it is a A/T-S and not a G91A? The Geolandar part of the name is pretty much meaningless; they apply it to everything from light truck tires to small passenger car tires.

dont run E rated tires on your Rav, you will HATE them(loud and hard), a D range is more than plenty

as for BFG AT our Rav, why not? they are awsome tires, we even run them(33's) on our Lexus.....Discount Tire said "you want 33 AT on the LX?" yes........."but they no one does that and they wont fit" mount them up.......I promise they fit with NO rubbing.........sure as heck hey did

I used to run BGF MT's on all my rigs but as time went by I changed all but 2 of them to AT's
