Truck has 168,000 runs good when warm. Got where it would not start when cold. When it did it ran really rough and missed bad until engine gets warm. Mechanic said 2 injectors were bad, replaced them. Starts better on cold mornings but still has no power until the temp gets up. Do injectors usually give problems, 168,000 seems not many miles for a diesel. BTW not cheap $350 a piece. |

Are you plugging it in?
The lack of power at cold temps is the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve closing to aid in warm up. It's possible it's sticking closed on you. 168,000 is about what I would expect for Injector replacement, but I am at 170,000 and going good on my stock sticks.. It could be an HPOP issue as well. High Presure Oil Pump that is used to fire the injectors.. I would have your tech do a contribution test on it, and then put Auto Enginuity on it to see if PCM called for pressure is matching that of actual pressure from the HPOP. |

Yes on mornings when in the 20's have been plugging it up. It does aid in starting but runs like crap till warmed up. I will look into your other suggestions. Thanks for the help. |

How long since your last oil change? Are you running regular oil or synthetic? It can be well below zero and my 7.3 will still crank up and start. Even without plugging it in I've never had problems. I found that switching to synthetic oil made a huge difference in cold weather performance.

I have a 2000 f350 7.3 with 208,000 miles on it. I have started having starting problems also. Starts just fine if I plug her in. I tested my glow plugs and found 1 of them bad. I tested the glow plug relay and I have good voltage at the 2 large wires (constant) I have power at one of the small wires. power drops at 1 minute or so. Should there be power at both of the small wires on the relay?
If so, I will need to replace the glow plug relay. |
