A little back info. Right before thanksgiving I changed the oil, it was about a quart low, and check all the fluid. I had driven about 1500 miles, and last week on the way to work it started making this aweful noise. It sounded like I had lost the belt, so I shut down and pulled over. When I looked under the hood, the belt was intact. I started it up again, and it sounded almost like it was exhausting out the air intake. I shut it down right away, called a tow truck and got it home. the first thing I did was check the dip stick, it was dry. I check my driveway, my parking spot at work, and where it started making the noise, and no oil. I have had suggestions of checking the timing belt, and someone else thinks i need to replace/rebuild the motor... I am looking for anyone who can help me with an armchair diagnosis. I am thinking of pulling the timing belt cover and start there by checking if it let loose. Any other ideas??????????? |

F 150's dont have timing belts, they have chains. Your timing chain may be loose but you did not mention it was running rough so its not likely. You need to determine if the engine is consuming oil, or leaking it. If your vehicle is the 5.4 it is possible that one ( or more) of your spark plugs has blown out. Sounds like two seperate problems that need to be addressed.little more info would be great. |

its the 5.4 and it is a chain, not belt. the lack of oil and the backfire (not sure what else to call it, but it didnt sound like backfire) certainly could be two separate problems. Truck has about 160k miles on it. eta, it hasnt run rough before this. I think I might pull the plugs and check them, but not really even sure what i am looking for. |
