Just in from my source at GM, The Big Block is Dead, GM is discontinuing all 502 and 454 engines in December, including the crate engines. If you were thinking of buying a crate motor do it now

I am sure there will always be aftermarket builders as long as there is a market for it. Usually a better option anyways.

Of course not, it was never about "need", it's all about "want".  Men want BIG engines.

Yup. There are a few aftermarket companies making GM big and small block engines.

Also, considering how long these engines last they'll be around for a LONG time to come. Unless you put a connecting rod through the block they can be rebuilt many times over.

Commies to the core!!!  Fuck GM!!!  Nothing is more American than big block V8's, damn them, DAMN THEM TO HELL!

Just remember when people say, good, no one NEEDS a semi automatic black rifle.  Sounds like you're on the right track.

The GM 502's were great engines for the money. There are a lot of "builders" out there that WISH they could make one run as decently and actually run for more then 10K miles.

Most 'big block' applications (RVs, for example) will just end up going diesel...

Most of the trucks that those motors used to go in already ARE diesel....

NOW... If they kill the small block V8, THAT will be blasphemy!

You ever try to haul 4 tons of gravel on the back of a C30 dump bed truck powered by a 350? Doesn't exactly get out of it's own way. A 454 in that truck would be much more powerful... it's not like fuel economy even factors in when you're talking about moving certain things. Or rather, fuel economy is seen on a much different scale as compared to passenger cars.

The traditional "small block" has been gone for a few years.  The V-8 they have been building the last few years (5.3 ect) is a totally different engine/

Beautiful set up.

I had a 71 Chevelle SS back in the day (1974-77)

Big block, TH400, 12 bolt 3.73 posi, headers, intake, Holley 750 double pumper.  Good times...

No hearsay, directly from the plant that makes them. I have friends that work there and one of them called me yesterday to say I better get off my butt if I want to get one for my 62 pickup project. A few years ago
I would have went to the back of the garage and picked out a core and built one, but those days are gone.

Yes, the LS series is a different motor....

But it's still the same size/displacement, which is what I'm referring to...

Was a 1970 SS396, bench seat, column shift turbo 400, A/C.

Was bought with a 454.  We put in the Ramjet 502, 3.08 12 bolt rear end with eaton posi, rebuilt the trans a few times now it has a 2500 extra heavy duty converter, 255/60/15 tires on reproduction "look alike" wheels, and rear disc brakes.  I've learned a lot working on this car, and now I'm honestly tired of working on it.  I haven't touched it in probably a year.  Its tough to keep up in the hot rod world, everyone always has something faster, better, shinier, whatever.

I just bought this 62 C10 shortbed, its almost too nice to cut up, tune up,brakes, tires and new bed wood and you have a good driver, the stovebolt 6 runs great, three on the tree, steering is tight, 4:11 gears in the rear, and everyting else in unmolested.

When chrysler got bailed out the first time part of the deal was for them to destroy their big block production equipment.

I kind of was waiting for this to come around.
