Any issues with them?
I am going to sale my 1997 Wrangler Sport and get a Cherokee Sport, keeping with the 4.0 I6 motor. I can find them with 100k miles and for under 5k usually. |

The 4.0 is the only requirement (fixed)
I want something with more cargo area, and rides better then my Wrangler. So, the Cherokee is the best option, since I can tow a trailer with it also. My goal is the sale the Wrangler, buy a decent Cherokee Sport, and get a 4 wheeler later on to off road with. The Wrangler will take way more money and time then I am willing to invest to get it the way it should be for off road fun. Beside, its my only transportation. |

The 4.0 is all but bullet proof.
I saw one a few years back a Jeep show with over 650k. The guy told uis no major issues just a reseal and the gen stuff that goes out like battery, water pump, brakes etc. A good friend had well over 300k on his when it tried to dance with a truck and lost. |

I like mine. http://www.lonestarjeepclub.org/board/images/garage/attach/garage_vehicle-155-12431335851.jpg They are just as tough as a Wrangler. Bigjeep I love Cherokee's. They're great vehicles. I have owned them. I would again. I love them. That's one hell of a Cherokee, too, BTW. But they are NOT as strong as a Wrangler. Especially the two doors. The Unibody just can't compete with the body-on-frame Wrangler for strength. I'm not saying that they aren't plenty strong, but there are tons of people who have managed to bend the unibody of a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee when doing serious 4x4ing. You can do some amazing things with a Cherokee. Far beyond what almost anything else on the road is capable of. But unibodies just aren't as strong as body-on-frame. |

Had they solved the cracking exhaust manifolds by that time? (I've got an 05 Wrangler Sport with the 4.0L) That was done in '01 May have been done under recall, IIRC. In any event, there are cheap replacements out there that don't have that problem. |

I have both Jeeps TJ/XJ you miss the point MOST people will never wheel their jeep hard so both are about equal for your average wheeler. I have a tendancy to break them before their time so they last about 2 years max before I sell them TJ/XJ whatever. I see my fair share of screwed up Jeeps at my shop in Wylie Texas but most of the failures are not the Jeeps fault. Its amazing how may people think Jeeps are u-boats and try to dive. Back on subject a 2000 Cherokee would make a fine all around Jeep. Bigjeep |

The only 2000 specific thing I can think of is the cracking 0331 cylinder head castings. The head casting number is stamped on the driver's side at the topsomewhere opposite cylinder 3. The 0331 head appeared on '00-'06 modelsthough some '99's may also have it. The exhaust header/manifolds do crack, down by the collector. Worn/broken motor mounts seem to be at least a contributing factor. I got a 99 XJ about two months ago after my Ranger was stolen. So far I like it although the gas mileage is worse than I'd hoped for. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i174/philinseattle/ba3d7726.jpg Gas mileage is a non factor for me. I live 7 miles round trip from work. |
