My brother just bought a 1993 nissan maxima with 100,000 miles.  (v-6)

I am doing a tune-up on it and I noticed some quirks.

It idles just fine, but when you put just a little pressure on the throttle it starts to sputter and die.  If you give it a lot of throttle it runs fine but has a slight knocking sound at high RPM.  The car also has a slight exhaust leak that I am working on patching up.

I'm baffled, any ideas about what is wrong with it?   (just changed spark plugs, wires, cap, fuel and air filter.)

unplug the MAF sensor and see what it does

TPS on the sputter. Does it knock under load and not just "revved" up?

Was this problem present before you did the tune up, and what plugs did you put in it?

I will check the throttle position sensor, I do not know what a MAF sensor is.

It does make a very slight knocking sound under load but not nearly as bad as when at high RPM
The knocking was present before the tune up, and I used NGK V-power BKR6E-11

MAF=Mass Air Flow meter. right after the air filter.

We think alike.  I was guessing a dead spot on the mass air flow sensor.  IIRC it uses that "door" style sensor.

No, not on a 93. It uses the hot wire type. But MAF sensor would be my first thought too. We did have some issues with corrosion on the TPS terminals causing bad hesitation right off idle. It has both hard (for auto trans) and soft idle contacts.

Also check the plug wires for arcing. Spray them with a water bottle and listen for the snap noise.

To the OP, you didn't say if it was a 3.0 SOHC or the 3.0 DOHC. If it's a DOHC and has a knocking sound from the upper end it could be the variable cam timing sprockets. If this is the engine and noise you have let me know. I'll tell you how to check if that's the cause of the noise.

After dicking around with it a while I figured it was over my head and we took it to a mechanic.   He said it was the TPS and he is going to fix it.

Hmm, it is by brother's car and I have no idea which engine it is.  I will have to check when he brings it back over and get back to you.
