I was out running errands in my 2003 Ranger today, and I went to start it, and for a split second it was turning over normally, then it started making a loud fast click from under the engine. Just to be sure I went and checked my battery cables, and cleaned them up even though I doubted that was the problem. I removed the battery cables, cleaned them up and cleaned up the terminals, but that didn't help. My truck is a 5 speed, so I was able to call a couple friends to help me push start it. It started up just fine with the push, and I was able to drive it the 5 miles back home. However, on my way home my ABS light was flashing intermittantly, and at stops, my speedo was hovering between 10 and 20MPH. I have never seen either of these problems before today.
I plan on picking up a new starter tomorrow, but that doesn't explain the other problems. Could the other problems be because I unhooked my battery? |

Sounds like it is a solenoid. Located somewhere on the fender. Check your connections there too.
You can jump the wire from the battery to one of the small wires and see if it will turn over (someone inside the truck pushing in on the clutch). I wouldnt jump to the conclusion of a starter yet. |

I would say the starting and other problems are from low voltage, you probably have an alternator issue. This, do a voltage check running and off and have the load tested battery tested. [Autozone does it] Check all connections from the battery. I doubt its the starter and I wouldn't bother changing it out until I got the other stuff done. |
