| It would be cool if we could get the components painted before assembly. Though I don't think we'd make the 10-12 week window Cat wants us to hit, especially when there's only 5 of us in the shop, of which only 2 have any meaningful experience. Even with help for the last couple of weeks, it still took me 11 weeks to complete, but I was also waiting 3 weeks for the trans. |

| Also...funny(ish) story. We pulled the bed off because they had a newer bed in the yard that was in better shape (allegedly). We coordinate so that the "new" bed shows up, swing it onto the machine, then load the old bed onto the trailer and get it back to the customer. We could see from quite a ways away that the pin bores were oval in the new bed. Said "fuck it", we'll mount it. Turns out that the left bore was also stretched and pinched the bore so tightly that the pin would not even start. I would've had to grind out about 1/4" of material. No idea how they managed that. So, we called the customer, and they had us put the old bed back on and send the new bed back. It was such a cluster. |

Getting everything painted during the rebuild is really awesome. It doesn't hold us up as the 3 painters get it done pretty fast. It actually saves total time as when we are done they just touch it up and add the decals. The frame in the background is a 775 getting rebuilt, its on hold as the dump body is junk, all rusted out and will cost too much to repair. They are looking for a good used bed. A few years ago me and another tech were getting 836H done in 12-13 weeks, paint job at the end. Now we are too busy that only one tech does a rebuild with some help from the junior techs or the apprentices. They want this 627 done by the end of April. Do you use a crane for the the beds? We used to have a Grove but it needed too many repairs so we got ride of it. We now either use a crane company or usually pick them with a few excavators as we'll have a few 336 or bigger at the shop. |

| Discovered something interesting yesterday. Another tech is wrapping up his D8T rebuild and he brought over the ashtray insert that goes into a cup holder. Inside the Cat box was a bag with a Ford logo and part numbers. |

If you work at a Cat dealer, you get X plan pricing on new ford vehicles. i used to work at a local Cat factory, they made splined axle shafts for ford. |

Almost all of its is Bendix parts in a Cat box. Sometimes still in the Bendix package. The Cat parts are way more expensive. |

Yeah, I’m wondering how this one will hold up. After 1 week I’m at 3.5 MPG average. Get about 6 while driving. Lots of idle time. Might have been a better option to run an Enpak for the crane and compressor. Then an auxiliary ac unit to keep the cab cool. But what do I know. |

Alright cat guys need your expertise. We currently have 3 mini cat 306s slated for a project where they will be hard mounted to the top of an individual shipping container. They will then be used to lift off the lid for a container using an attachment that uses the same attaching bars as the bucket. Once lifted the machine will spin the 180 degrees to place the lid onto another container. That being said. Is there any way to have two different profiles in the HMI. One for unlimited control and another for limited function speed and locking out the travel and blade functions? This sound absolutely insane but I need to make it work. I want to disable the travel so they don’t accidentally step on a pedal while up top and pull against the lashings. |

If they do hit the pedals, it won't move. I wonder if unplugging the pedals would inhibit any other functions? Of course, then the operators are going to bitch about codes, though. |

| I don't think there's a way to do it without a compromise somewhere. I'd live with the fact that they may try to travel, but the chains will stop them while informing them that any damage they cause is on them. A 306 doesn't have much traction power; even 3/8" grade 70 transport chain will put up with it. 1/2" chain and binders as tight as you can get them, and send them on their way. |

Took out the side bearing and the diff chewed a half inch deep into the diff housing. They actually called it in for excess oil building up in the axle. Blew out the through shaft seal. Bearing rollers went through the pinion and took chunks out of it. |

If one was failing then all 3 were done. |

If one was failing then all 3 were done. IIRC, the service letter just says to scope it when iron content is high. It's been a minute since we've done one, but I think the dowels are updated and a new torque spec. And yes, if 1 is failing, all 3 get done. |

Service letter expired. But machine still has power train warranty. Warranty would cover the failure, but not the rest. They didn’t want. To leave the machine down to do the others either. Changed the diff lock pins from press in to screw in. And they do their SOS regularly. Don’t know how this was missed though. One of the largest construction companies in the nation. |

Looks like it just started with that 2nd sample, probably didn't inspect if they dropped the oil at all. Funny-ish SOS story: the 740B that I just finished last month had the fron axle oil sample come back with fuel dilution. That customer's rep had sent me the report, and we're all asking how that was possible. He was supposed to follow up with the lab to see if there was some kind of error. They're also going to pull another sample after it gets delivered to the customer, whenever the paint gets done. |

Unless you were working with a very inexperienced trainee or maybe cleaned the axle housing out with diesel. I just looked again. front and rear axles have worse readings at that last sample than the center one did. Guess I will call them tomorrow and see if they will drop the oils and see if it's chunky on the front and rear as well. |

The only thing we can think of is if who rebuilt it left a lot of solvent residue, but considering the oil capacity in that axle, it would have to be quite a bit of it. It sat for about a week or 2 before we put oil in it, so I would think the solvent would've evaporated by then. |
