| I have a new system (R134) that I need to evacuate and charge. Will a cheap venturi vacuum pump be sufficient, or should I use the motor/pump-head type? |
| i think most autoparts stores will rent/loan a vacuum pump for this purpose. I'm not sure if your pump would pull the required vacuum. I think it needs to be rather significant (-30" sticks out in my mind- don't use that number, strictly from memory). You'll definitely need a gauge set that the low side reads vacuum on. |
I didn't think to look for motor vacuums at harbor freight. They have 1.2cfm and 2.5 cfm for $69 and $79. Do I need the bigger one?My AC is by Vintage Air. It is a new, complete system install with oil already in it. I put it in my 1931 Ford streetrod this past weekend. |
Rent or buy a vacuum pump. Make sure you use new oil in the pump. Since you are doing this yourself then it won't be the last time you crack into your A/C, so if you buy, buy some quality tools. |
