Should it cost >$300 to have this done?
I'm not a DIY'er when it comes to cars so I doubt I'd have been able to do something like this myself no matter how simple it is.

Just wondering...

And WTH does this thing do exactly?

The cost of the part is often substantial.

Diagnosis time, and replacement time will be charged.

The location of the sensor can make the job a real MFer, and age tends to make them sieze up and you have to extract them, rethread the hole or install a new bung in the exhaust and weld up the old hole.

The oxgen sensor measures the oxygen content of the exhaust gas.  Its measurements are in millivolts and the information is used to trim the fuel mixture to provide the best economy and lower emissions.  It is the "feed back" to the computer to let it know what is coming out of the tailpipe.

my o2 sensor in my pickup was $65.It is located on the exhaust pipe near the manifold. They can be a pain in the butt because of rust and the expansion and contraction. If helps if you take the vehicle out,get it nice and hot, then take out the old o2 sensor.Make sure you got some good heat proof gloves. It took me about 10 minutes to change it out YMMV

Call a parts house and get a price on the O2 sensor for your car.  They are REALLY easy to replace.

It measures your exhaust and then tells the ECU on adjustments to make to the air/fuel mix.

What kind of vehical do you have? I can give you an estimate from AllData. This is a program that alot of places use.

I did one on my wife's truck last year. Sensor cost over $75 IIRC. Could not have done it without a torch to heat the threaded insert to get the old one out. Plus I had my own OBDII canbus scantool.

I looked up the 3.3/3.8 engine. If you have one of thoes, there is 2 sensors in the exhaust. The front (pre convertor,up stream) sensor pays 1.4 hours to replace. The rear (post convertor, down stream) sensor pays .5 hours to replace. Take those numbers and mulitply by their labor rate and that is what it should cost. Adding any diag time to that also.

From the Land Rover dealership, o2 sensors were $500...each. My old '96 discovery had 4 of them. Be happy if its under $500 installed.
