Can anyone tell me about stepside trucks?

Are they good?  Not good?  Anything you would gain/lose over a regular box truck?

I'm eyeing a used Z71 Silverado that's a stepside.  Other than the funky tail light cluster, it seems to be decent.

Someone school me on this.

They look cool, that's about it - well, come to think about it, I don't really think they look all that hot on newer trucks.  Old school stepsides were cool.  You lose bed width.

On the older Z71s (89- 98, or whenever they changed the body style) the stepside bed was lighter and thus made for a slightly faster truck.

And yes, they do look cooler.

They are also easier to get stuff out of.

My Dad had several GMC stepsides. He was in the building trades and his guys liked them. These were work trucks and not drive in cruisers. They were 3/4 and 1 ton trucks and had an 8' bed. Made it easy to climb in the bed instead on climbing on the tailgate. He got rid of them when he retired.

Me either.  My dad has had fleetside(non-stepside) on the two Chevy's he's had since 2004.

The first one was a '97 Chevy C2500 with an 8 foot bed, the current one is an '06 Chevy C1500 with a 6.5 foot bed.  He uses it for hauling occasional stuff along with the cruising around town.

I didn't know that they even made step sides on 8 foot beds, that would be pretty helpful if your tryng to unload alot of lumber.

I agree, Toyota makes a new model that has the stepside bed, it looks horrible. I don't even think its an actual stepside, I think its just modeled to look like it is.

If you want something cool and fast, buy a sports car...

Trucks are made to work...

I wouldn't have anything less than an 8' fleetside on any of my trucks...

Why pay the same or more money for "less" truck?

my $.02

I had a 97 f150 with a stepside. The bed sides were made of fiberglass. It was backed in to 3 times and once a deer ran into it full speed. You could never tell.

Newer stepside trucks look stupid, especially when coupled with an exntended cab. Now 20 years and back they look sweet.

The nicest looking stepside was the mid 50s F100. Now that was a sweet looking truck!

Agree, older stepside trucks looked great. The new body styles don't look so great with stepside beds.

The truck in Red Dawn had stepsides!
