What year is it? If it's a pre-1966 you can run a lot of 356 suspension parts on it if you want it to handle well. Not cheap but you can get things like decambered C-Links, titanium off-road transmissions etc. The floor pan looks bad, pretty common on old VW's. How much time are you willing to put into this project? Have you ever tackled a old bug before? Lots of hours and hard work. Cheap, maybe if your good at fabrication and sourcing parts. Check these links out, it may help you realize what your in for in the long run. VW restoration manual Rat Rod I worked for a air-cooled porsche shop(356-911)that built race cars and restored old cars when I was still in school a long time ago. Striping, cleaning and reassembling them was my main job in the winter between racing seasons. Most of these cars hadn't seen the road since the 60's-70's. Barn/field finds were my specialty. The car your looking at looks like it might just qualify. I'd go with the stealth look. I helped one of my friends build a 2.8 liter 911 V6 VW bus(1964)that was running sub 14 sec quarter miles and it would turn. Scared the shit out of the hippies on Dead tour. Plus it was more reliable. He was the bosses son so we got the parts cheap. One of my friends is restoring a 1964 356 sunroof coupe right now so if you need any help I'll try to guide you in the right direction. A rat rod would be cool. Never done one but I still have some connections in the Porsche/VW world and it sounds like fun so PM me if you need anything. Parts, links etc. I just started restoring my 1993 Corrado SLC. Got it new in 1993 but it's been in storage since 2001. Lots of abuse when I was younger. I love german cars! My Audi S4 is running almost as fast a 2007 Z06 Corvette, it will be by summer if I can obtain the parts, Front mount Intercooler, Power steering cooler, and oil cooler. I'm pulling way over 1g in acceleration with the crappy all-season tires I have. All on order. For less than half the price of a Vette and it has 4-doors. I hope to see sub 11.5 secs this summer in the QT mile and 195 mile mph on Road America if I cough up the cash for the parts and some weight reduction. The only problem I'm having is me being 6'4" so I'll have to install a lower racing seat to wear a helmet without bending over all day. Good luck! |
, anyways, they were trying to pull the ebay auction type shit thru Emails, I told them this was a bad idea. Anyways, they just emailed me back saying they have ZERO offers on it, they want it sold by monday and gone. They said they are looking in the neighborhood of 1200bux, its an estate sale (death in the family, etc). Anyways, I dont know much about the older bugs and just curious to find out any info on weather I shoudl venture into this project or not. Money doesnt flow easily, but im mechanically skilled enuff to get by.
