I just sold my crotch rocket and am looking into kit bikes such as a cruiser or chopper, etc. Does anyone have any experience with building these? If so, what insight can you offer? I'm debating between buying something like a Yamaha Warrior or building a chopper from scratch. Price range is around 8 Gs so it won't be having tons of chrome, etc.

Well cheapest "kit" bike I seen was $15000 and thats NOT including paint. Building a bike you need to keep all reciepts, MSO's from teh frame and engine, find out what your state regs on bikes are (turn signals, exhaust, fender req), how your insurance company deals with customs and have ALOT of patience and mechanical ability. Seriously watch a few "Build or Bust" episodes on SpeedTV and see how goofy it can get when you try to rush building your frst bike. Basically look at taking a year to build your own compfitably. If you want to build your own, go for it. You'll know more about bikes that way. But do keep all manuals, invoices, paperwork together incase you have to repair something or sell it. Customs are a PITA to repair if you dont know what parts it has.

One of the guys on the forum built a kit bike last year. I think he was from Arizona. Check out page 2 of this forum there is a bike picture thread. There is a picture of the home built there.

Try Sucker Punch Sally or Flyrite Choppers. Over your budget tho. Best bet if you really want an American big twin is to buy an older shovelhead as cheap as you can. Use the title and what parts you like. Sell the rest and spends yer money. It's not for the faint of heart. You may be better off in the metric world if you can stand it. I know I couldn't.

Go to cyborgcycles.com. I built my bike thru them. I didnt get a kit bike, but bought it piece by piece. It took about 6 months. Ask about the bike builder program, you get a discount if you get the parts thru them. Good to work with. I highly recommend them.

Go with the Warrior.  My brother has had his warrior for 3 years and i've had mine for 2.  They are solid sport cruisers with some balls, there are plenty of mods you can do, and you don't see many of them around.  I picked up a leftover 02 new in sept. of 04 for $8,449 out the door.
