Excessive bouncing/porpoising, or wetness on the shock indicating a leak.

When you hit a big bump in the road, the vehicle should bounce exactly once and stop, if the shocks are working properly.

Best technique is to have someone mechanically inclined to follow you driving down a road/highway.  Worn shocks are easy to spot when you're not in the vehicle...

I can usually tell going over bridge expansion joints that are bumpy, you will notice a lot of bouncing  after you hit it. You should only bounce once.  You can also jump on the bumpers, bounce it up and down, jump off should recoil once then stop..

If you're going to keep your truck, looking on Amazon or Rock Auto for decent shocks and replace them.
