| I recently picked up a 2014 xterra S with 37k miles and started going over some things to keep it running smooth. I changed the oil and filter, front and rear diff, and transfer case fluids. what else should I replace? |

Quoted:
would you recommend a transmission drain and fill? if so would replacing the fluid with amsoil instead of nissian fluid be ok? You can do the transmission fluid at the 50k-60k mark. (unless the manual says otherwise) You can use amsoil fluid if it meets the requirements of the oem fluid. You may also want to look at the specs for both fluids to see how they compare. |

I usually try to buy enough fluids for multiple changes at the same time.. i was doing drain and refill with Matic-s every 20k to 30k miles.. buy the matic-s by the case, get small discount.. lately i switched Valvoline Max life full synthetic (meets matic S) and I added 10oz of Lubeguard it take a little less than 4 qts IIRC.. I have a 2012 Pro-4x.. brian |

This schedule works for me regardless of manufacturer's intervals, recommendations: every 5K - rotate tires - oil change - toss bottle of Chevron Techron in gas tank every 15K add - change air filter every 30K add - plugs - transmission, differential flush every 4 years - coolant flush - thermostat as needed - flush brake fluid - flush clutch fluid (for those with a manual tranny) - hoses - plug wires - brake rotors, pads - etc |

Wat? That seems like a very reasonable maintenance schedule..........Pretty much what I do minus the transmission flush. I swap mine, I don't flush it (which is why I tend to do it every 30-40k. |

Lets see. Assuming the manufacturer doesn't state a specific change interval? 5K: Oil changes are fine as long as you aren't using synthetic. Then you are just wasting money. 15K: for an air filter? Unless you live in a very dirty environment this is overkill. The normal interval is around ~30k miles. 30K: Spark Plugs? Unless you are either running the cheapest plugs you can get your hands on or some super high performance plugs the standard interval tends to be ~50K-60K. If you have long life plugs that interval can be extended to ~100k. Transmission/differential fluid? Again the norm for a general interval is ~50K-60K. Outside of certain transmissions/differentials where the manufacturer specifies a shorter interval, 30K is overkill. 4 years: Coolant flush? The initial fill on most vehicles is good for 10 years/150k. Manufacturers then tend to specify 5 years intervals after the factory/initial fill. Thermostat? Should be in the as needed section. 4 year intervals definitely seems like overkill. |

(just to make yourself feel better) And there are plenty of components that can fail that aren't covered by your list. But the dealership/your mechanic and the auto part store sure will love your additional business. |
