I am going to paint a set of steel wheels for my truck.

There are several paint choices out there. PlastiKote, Dupli-color, Rust-Oleum, etc.

For those that have painted steel wheels, which paint held up the best/which paint would you recommend?

What color do you want & what kind of condition are the wheels in?

You could use POR-15 if you wanted permanent black, or Plasti-dip if you want something temporary that you can peel off when you decide to change the color.

I painted the aluminum wheels on my fj. I scuff sanded them thoroughly and then masked off and painted them with dupli-color primer and wheel paint. They turned out great and have held up well.

I painted the steel wheels on my Subaru with flat black rustoleum spray paint from Home Depot.  I just sanded off the rust spots with some sand paper and scuffed the wheels with a scorthbrite pad.  I sprayed two layers and they still look good 8 months later.  I bought two cans and only needed one for four wheels.  I figure for the four dollars, I can can spray it once a year if it gets ratty looking.

I have also used platidip on my winter BMW wheels.  If I had to do it again, I would have just used the rustoleum.  It was cheaper and I needed less cans.

My factory wheels have some oxidation on them after 8 years and 140k.

I ordered plasti dip and will likely spray them this weekend.  Too cheap to buy new,  or even powder coat. Guys seem to have really good luck with it. Low cost, and stupid easy.

I just plasti dipped my aluminum wheels due to oxidation and I absolutely love the look.

I have, with much success, used Rustoleum products to paint my wheels.

Before smoothing and painting

After

I sanded, cleaned with alcohol, filled holes, re-sanded, primed 2 coats, sprayed 3-4 with Rustoleum auto enamel, then did Rustoleum clear over the top (2-3 coats)

then buff and voila

It's all in the prep work though imo

I have to get around to doing this on my car.  I've got some road rash I need to repair (JB weld metal works surprisingly well for this) and they'll need a new coat of paint afterwards.

I've used plasti dip and spray paint in the past. I'm going to black out the wheels on my Silverado in a few months when I put new tires on it....I'll most likely use paint as it holds up longer than plasti dip.
