I consider myself a fairly hard core DIYer, for what that's worth (nothing.)  I also know what I don't know.

One of those things: air bags.  Is there a good, preferably free online training module (or similar) that would allow me to educate myself and understand the systems better?  It would make me feel a little better about working in and around steering columns and dashes (and in newer vehicles, seats, headliners, etc.)  I'd like to know more than "disconnect the negative battery cable and let it sit for a while."

Not that I'm aware of. Too much liability I think.

Look at the base of the steering column for the big yellow harness and connector. That the drive bag harness. Disconnect there for instance disabling of the system. The connectors have shorting bars that short the circuits together and turn the system off. It will set codes if you turn the ignition on but it will self clear when you reassemble it and turn the key back on.
