I bought a jack and jackstands for my jeep and want to make sure I'm lifting it from the proper position.

Is this ok?  (differential cover resting on jack base)

Or is this the right way (jack base on the back of the differential)

I would say the back is safer.

If you do the front, you have a chance of crushing the front plate that may cause a leak.

The second picture is the right way to do it. Putting pressure on the differential cover wont be nearly as safe/stable as putting pressure on the differential  housing itself.

You want the lowest part of the diff INSIDE the jack cup. Otherwise it can spit the jack out the front

ETA most diffs don't have that flange cast around the bottom yours has

This is what I was thinking... on most axles if you tried it the way shown in the second picture, it would slide right off as soon as you put pressure on it.

Or worse, after it was up!
