I got a new toy, and my extra funds are being funneled into this.

Fun 6-speed manual coupe.  It came with  TRD wheels, TRD sway bars, spoiler and all weather floor mats with the 86 logo.

Those are decent numbers.   Rather than try to put more power into it and sacrifice durability or reliability.   Tossing out some weight could work pretty well to give virtually same effect.

Improve suspension and traction and it would be fun as hell.

If you have other vehicles I say go for it.

That's sort of what I'm thinking. I want to put a set of GSC S1 cams in it, and I need to tweak a few small things like install the catch can I made and she should be close to my goal engine output (380)  I estimate it to be about 2850lb without me in it as it sits. To start pulling out more weight is going to start seriously detracting from looking like a street car (inside) and much much more gutted race car. That said I work in a sheet metal fab shop so I can make pieces to cover the doors out of aluminum etc.

Talked to the wife about it... and reasoning it with myself... I think after all these years of making it "nicer" as in restoring some things... I think I'm just going to say fuck it and go all in. There's no A/C, there's no passenger seat...it's already a toy. Why not?

But to what end? It's not actually a race car, and the modifications would likely make it illegal or crazy unlimited class for any actual racing plus need a cage... so I guess just to have a street toy? Fuck it there not worth much anyway...right?

Do Time Trials, you don't "have" to have a cage, (I had a custom roll bar built for my car because wearing a harness without rollover protection is stupid) your car looks like it might class as TT3/TT2 in NASA as it stands.


If you wanted to go wheel to wheel, the spec is just a cage/fuel cutoff/fire protection away from the super touring classes.

Nah I'm not talking about drag, to me drag racing is just a metric for acceleration, once the car does the time I want it too then I don't much care. What I really want to do is take it around Road Atlanta and see what kind of lap time I can get in it. Where can I find out more about doing "time trials"? Is that the same as "Time Attack"? Because all I really want to do is race the clock anyway.. in wheel to wheel i'd be to concerned about bumping and rubbing.

If you haven't had much exposure to road course driving, I would start with HPDE events and work your way up the ranks and get comfortable at speed.   Time trial guys are generally fairly advanced and fast drivers.

You can't just jump into TT as you need to be approved for a time trial race license.

Become a member of your NASA region, sign up for an event in HPDE 1 and get an instructor, work your way up through there.

(during this process use Harry's lap timer on your phone to get lap times)  

When you get to TT you'll start using a transponder.

goto nasaproracing.com find your region, become a member and sign up for your first HPDE at a regional weekend.  

NASA runs tracks all over the country so there probably is a region that has an event going on at that track (you can also be a member of one region and sign up to run a different region event)

My brother put a Pontiac 400 big bore in his Trans am, swapped from the auto to a manual at the same time,  left the auto rear ( don't recall what the final drive ratio was but it was geared low) gear limited to not much above 115 so he tells me. I road in it with him once when I was little. (he's 10 years older than I)

Thing had balls,  and torque.

Yeah it’s no modern muscle car by any means,  but it’s a torque monster for its age.  With 445lbs of torque, posi 3.55 gears and no overdrive.... It can burn them to the next light, haha!

Love Miatas.  My last one was a 91 with a Supercharger.  

I'm looking for the B-52 "Peace Through Superior Firepower" sticker for it...
