Has anyone ever attempted to restore old license plates?

I've got some stamped custom plates that my aunt and grandfather had on their vehicles back in the 80's and was thinking of restoring them for a little project of mine.

There's businesses that do this for vintage car owners.  Done all the time.  I was reading about getting year of manufacture plates for my '66 Mustang and stumbled across one state that stipulates that the YOM plate must not be a restored plate. Has to have the original paint from when it was issued.

I have original 1967, 1968, and 1969 plates from my county, with the hopes of hanging one of them on the back of a Mustang one day...

I have a 1963 Ford Falcon convertible 289 that we found 63 plates for. Aside from that if you want to "restore" plates, you should start with stripping the paint unless you want the petina, I use naval jelly and steel wool to strip it, then just repaint it original.

You're not getting any younger, and they're not getting any cheaper!  No time better than the present.

This isn't really for a classic vehicle project...the only classic vehicle I'm looking at currently is a 1946 CJ-2A and Texas didn't start reassigning plates until 1948 if memory serves correctly. This is what I was thinking of putting a restored license plate that has been in the family for 30+ years on.

For a non-vehicle application, I'd probably just strip it and paint it myself, unless you have no problem with paying a restorer to do it.
