I'm thinking about buying a new Ram with the 6.7 diesel and I'm wondering how the reliability of the engine and transmission is these days? I have read that in the past they had problems with the EGR. My last diesel was a 94 Dodge 2500, Man I loved that truck!  Thanks all!

We have one at work, I pull the EGR valve every 6 months or so when it starts throwing codes and clean it.  I've also put on two intake manifold heaters over the last two years, and an AC compressor, and a fuse box.... It's a 2008 with 35k miles on it.

Cleaning the EGR is definitely a recommended whenever you service the engine. Buddy has a 99 with 263k on it, we just replaced the head for $3500 due to cracks...we counted 12...and stopped there. He has a tuner on it...pump, larger lines...etc. We use the truck hard, he owns a beef farm and we haul hay and the tractors. It has been pretty reliable until lately. The Trans just took a dump and locked up on it. Also has a fairly new Chevy with a duramax. That just tows the camper. When we haul tractors the Chevy has to get in the right lane going up the mountains while the Dodge chugs on past.

All in all they are good to go.  Some challenges with EGR and VGT on a few model years, but a lot of those issues are fixed and the engine is very reliable.  The transmissions have gotten better over the years too.

Friend of mine has a 2011...Dodge replaced the transmission at 5000 miles, the DPF was clogging every 15k miles. Another friend has 2012...he's having the same DPF issue. The 2011 had the emissions removed in 2012 (by the Dodge dealer who was fed up with working on it) at 80k miles. Other than that, the 2012 has done pretty well. It is about to be replaced by a 2015 (warranty is up)...it replaced a 06 5.9 that had some injector issues.

My dad had an 06 5.9...150k miles an injector hung and wreaked havoc. It got traded for a fully loaded 2014 Laramie half ton. Funny thing, I told him to change the injectors when the truck hit 148k...everyone I know who's had  blow-by from the injectors either eating a hole in the piston, head or cylinder walls, had an 06 and it happened at 150k miles.

I hear the 2015's are supposed to be hitting around 20 mpg...still isn't close to the 24+ mpg those 06's were getting once they got broke in.

09 here. 107k miles. Auto trans.  I change my fuel filter every oil change.  Deleted the EGR and DPF stuff a long time ago.  I also put n a 160degree thermostat when I replaced the water pump at 80k (only thing I've had go wrong other than normal wear items). My truck sees a lot of abuse pulling heavy, working the hunting club, and playing offroad.
