I have a chevy prizm that uses about a quart of oil aevery 600 miles, my suspicion is that the carbon buildup has the rings sticking and the oil is getting past there and being used up. Otherwise the car runs fine no black or white smoke out of the exhaust. no leaks it just vanishes. I want to try some kind of engine flush / cleaner / chemical carbon removal treatment. I talked to my mechanic and he mentioned some sort of chemical treatment that runs about $300 so i want to try it myself for less. The toyota corolla/prizm has a bit of internet history for doing this, and the mechanic was familiar with this issue.
Does anybody have a chemical additive/treatmant that they like? thanks, |

I've used Schaeffer's Neutra 131. Big fan of it in the oil and the gas to clean and help keep engines clean. Seems to work quite well.
Neutra 131 I also use this to clean carbon and such from the heads of all my vehicles including my lawn mowers and my boat. I don't have any scientific analysis of how well it works but I don't have any substantial carbon buildup in my engines and they run great. I would run the Neutra 131 in the oil for awhile and also take the LMT and pull the plugs and spray a lot in each head. Let it sit overnight. Crank the engine to blow out any excess before reinstalling the plugs and starting it. It's going to blow lots of white smoke at first when you start it. Also FYI, oil burning is blue smoke. |

If that much oil is slipping past the rings, I would assume it to have quite a bit of spark plug fouling.
However, your mechanic should have performed a leak down test to be sure. I had a similar situation to this and it turned out to be my valve stem seals/worn valve guides. Didn't have smoke, but did have heavy oil consumption. If it is stuck rings, you should consider Marvel Mystery Oil added to your oil a few hundred miles before your oil changes. I had an old 232 inline 6 with stuck ring symptoms and I ran about a quart of MMO through the oil about 200 miles or so before I changed the oil, its a slow acting cleaner that dissolves deposits much more thoroughly than quick flush setups. If you have a heavily sludged engine (which I assume you may have), quick flush stuff will knock too much sludge loose, contaminate the oil pick up and starve the motor of oil. |

Quoted: Negative. Re-read my post. Quoted: Quoted: the OP is talking about motor flush solvents that are added to the oil, im pretty sure. the above two posters are talking about fuel additives. 900Driver can you clarify where you want to use these chemicals? Negative. Re-read my post. I read it. thought it was a typo because the manufacturer says this: Neutra Fuel Stabilizer is a highly concentrated multi-functional, ashless fuel stabilizer that is specially formulated for use in gasoline, diesel and L.P.G. fuels. Sorry for the assumption. |
| I'm open to whatever works, i was thinking of some kind of oil additive / cleaner / flush, but the fuel system cleaner is an option to consider . i have time to try them all i figured i would start with the cheapo fixes and go from there. i do have one spark plug that is more fouled than the other three, so its a safe bet that cylinder is one of the problems. i was goiing to pull that plug and let some cleaner in there sit over night and see what happens. this is a car that only sees about 6000 miles a year. |

If you want a cheap fix, try Gunk oil flush on your next oil change, it will only run you about $5 or so. It's not going to make an old engine new, but it seems to help a little. |

131 is not recommended for use in oil. It is basically butyl alcohol and acid. Do a search on bobistheoilguy. Lots of people are using Neutra with great results in the oil to clean up sludged engines. I put about 5-10 oz within about 1000 miles of my next oil change on all my vehicles. Works great. Also, Shaeffers recommends it for use in the oil to clean sludge and deposits. |
