I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee that belongs to the mother of a friend. Here's the problem She was driving when it started to make a tapping noise, Quickly over heated and shut off with her. I looked at it and  found that it had no oil in it at all. Filled oil and tried to start it. spun over but sounded like it had no compression except for one piston.  It has over 250K on it. I have a feeling that the timing chain has jumped time
Thanks for any info

Sounds like its time for a 500dollar craigslist motor and another 100k miles.

how much oil did you have to put in it?
might do a compression test on each cylinder sounds like you may have bigger problems than just a timing chain.

I put  four quarts in it, that's all I had with me. I haven't ran a compression test yet. I have a feeling you're right about that

I wouldn't even mess with it, she probably blew a head gasket too.  A used engine should be easy enough to find.

If she decides against fixing it, IM or Email me.  My 92 won't pass inspection due to rust.   Depending on cost, it may be cheaper to find a decent body with a shot driveline like this one.
