I went to the auto show today and spend all day drooling at the sweet cars.  I went with my best friend, who is a development engineer at GM.  That gave us a bit of special access.  We got in before the mass of humanity, I got to sit in the new Corvette and did I mention that I got in for free!!!

Some observations... First of all, fuel economy seemed to be a big push by all of the carnival barkers (product specialists) this year.  Everyone seemed to be interested by in the electric cars and hybrids.

The BMW display was the most boring, but had the biggest rush of people.  Lincoln's cars SUCK. And Mercedes has the world's most amazing cars again.

The one thing that I was most amazed by is the new matte paint that a lot of manufacturers are using.  The paint looks like a PITA to keep clean, and I guess it is hard as hell to maintain, it looked amazing.

Anyone else go?

The Ford Atlas truck concept looks pretty sweet from pics I've seen.

It was. I am sure the production truck's demenstions will be different...  But the lines and styleing details were sweet!

Was the Atlas truck larger than a current F150?

From the pics the Atlas and Corvette are my favorites.

The Atlas was taller and maybe a bit wider than the current F-150.

I have been a Corvette fan since I was a baby.  My uncle had one when I was young.  The new one is going to piss a lot of purists off.  But in my opinion, it will be heads and shoulders above anything we have ever seen before.  It is one sweet ride.

Ya, I think the Vette stole the show.

I was worried about the tail lights, but thats an easy change by the looks of it. I can not wait to see those things on the road.

My impression was "meh", not bad and not great. The Camaro rear end, Ferrari head lights, and the basic C6 shape didn't seem very interesting overall. I know it is supposed to be a brand new chassis and everything, but I can still see a lot of C6 in the body structure. I wonder what they did to solve the direct injection intake deposit issue in the new LT1.

The added weight on the C7 and the higher cost doesn't seem too enticing either. Pretty soon the Mustang GT will make more power at a lower price (440 hp 5.0L V8 vs 450 hp 6.2L V8)

The matte paint isn't necessarily harder to keep clean. I know that my Ducati's matte black PPG paint is far more scratch resistant than standard clear coated paint. The clean it, I can use a variety of products like Griot's waterless wash, or 303 Aerospace Protectant.

According to the rep that they had at the show, the C7 shares less than 10 parts with the C6.  Corvettes typically look similar model to model.  The C8 is going to be a radically different car though.  The C7 was supposed to be out in model year 2012 but bankruptcy kept that from happening. I agree that the car is getting WAY too heavy, but with everyone bitching about the Corvette's shitty interior they had to do something to keep it competitive.

Personally, I can't wait until the C7's start to roll down the road.  I really want a C6 Z06.  The price should start to get obtainable once the new ones start to show up at dealers.

I agree. The purists will bitch and moan with every change and modern update to the Corvette either way. I think GM did a good job making the vette appealing to those who would previously only consider foreign makes for that segment of sports car. The rental car interior was really its Achilles heel.
