I have a 2000 Mercury Sable with 110,000 miles. 3.0 liter engine.

Starts fine in warm weather, but not when the temperature is below 55 degrees. It's not the battery, it cranks fine. One suggestion from someone else was the MAF sensor, I looked at it and it looks perfectly clean.

Any simple things to look for?

depends on what you mean by hard starts.

cranks and cranks and never catches, stop and crank again it fires off.

cranks longer than normal in warm weather, (if so how much more) then starts

doesn't start at all

starts then dies

starts idles rough then dies

starts idles rough and then gets better when it warms up

It won't start if the temp is below 55 or so. It cranks and cranks and doesn't start at all.

Well, yesterday, it was about 58 degrees and it cranked and started right up and ran fine. Idles smooth. Drives fine. Went to HEB and came back. No problem.

Today it's below 50 and just cranks and cranks and doesn't start. Other than the starter turning, it doesn't even try to fire off.

A quick way to narrow down to if it is spark/ignition related or fuel related is to shoot a little ether(starting fluid) into the throttle body.
If it fires up for a second and dies, it is fuel related.  If it still has a no start at all, it is ignition related.

wow, that is not much of a temp change.

first instinct would be something electronic shrinking in the cold causing you a problem.

but I agree with the poster above, see if you can narrow down spark or fuel.

I would pull a plug and check for spark rather than spend money on starting fluid.

next I would try turning the key on to run but not start for about 10 seconds and then trying to crank to see if that worked.

either way let us know.

I turned the car to on and waited then tried to start and cranks and cranks but doesn't start.

I happened to have a can of starter fluid and sprayed it then turned the key and it started for a second. It's 46 degrees right now.

Very well could be the MAF sensor.
Unplug the MAF and try the vehicle again to see if it will start or start sooner.

I unplugged the MAF and it started right up.

Of course but I'm sure it was running all choppy.  Sounds like a fuel issue.  Could be a bad MAF. It happens. Cold doesn't mix well with electronics for some reason.

driving off tables now instead of actual input.

guess that confirms it is bad.

Good references, thanks. Probably won't drive it unplugged though.
