I have a 1994 ford truck. Lately it has been either not ideling at all or ideling rough. When it does this I do get a check engine light but it usually happens when the local auto shop is closed. It is not saving a code either when I take it in. A friend told me that it might be the oxygen sensor going bad.
Is there a way to test the oxygen sensor to see if it going bad? Any help would be appreciated. |

Check for leaks in you're air intake/throttle body system. You can spay carb cleaner around parts with the motor running. If the idle changes while spraying, then you may have a leak there. Be careful not to spray anything too hot.
Also, check for loose or worn wires. |

Sea Foam it and see if that works...
I wouldn't put any directly into the oil because it could result in clearing goo'ed up oil that is actually sealing leaks. Pour about 1/4 into throttle body, and the other half in gas tank... let sit for abou 30 minutes and crank it up. Smoke out the 'hood! |

I'd suggest cleaning the IAC and it wouldn't hurt to clean the rest of the throttle body if it hasn't been done in a while. ^^^This. Clean out the IAC valve and the throttle body. Carbon builds up just behind the throttle plate/s and causes rough or hunting idle. |

I drive an 88 I JUST got out of the shop today; it was the throttle position sensor.
couldn't read any codes, I saw the mech. just do a function test with a multi meter; it didn't give any resistance readings, so they replaced the $35 part and it runs great now. had similar idle issues as you described; wouldn't stay running without playing with the gas, ran good once you got going down the road, it just didn't want to run steady at idle or when letting off the gas to turn. cleaning everything up good wouldn't hurt either. good luck |

A TPS can be checked effectively with a meter. I think an analog meter works well for this. A digital meter responds too "choppy" and it can be hard to see a flat spot. Even though computers have made cars more intricate (and I'm still learning) I see where they have also in many ways made cars better. |
