I have seen a few hot rods recently that have paint that looks like flat black primer, but is actually paint.
Anyone have the skinny on this? Is it enamel, urethane, durable? Educate me. |

Flattening Agent
http://www.houseofkolor.com/products/specialty.jsp FLATTENING AGENT (FAO1) FA01 is designed to reduce the gloss of our acrylic lacquer and polyurethane enamel topcoats and clears. FA01 will not effect adhesion or hardness. You can vary the amount of gloss reduction (from 10% to 99%) depending on the amount of FLATTENING AGENT used. FA01 is great for undercarriages, frames and engine parts where high gloss is not desired, but a tough, durable finish is. |

As a old custom painter , it came into play 20 years ago or 30 lol,as a way to look KOOL
and the idea is/ was that its paint (sealing the car with paint) because priming your hot rod was in(but primer is open to water ) ie: primer don't / wont stop water from getting behind it........ back in the lacquer days , some of us mixed %'s of clear into the paint and adding more % clear on additional coats . You've heard the old timers saying 14coats of hand rubbed la la la ya ya ya ......... when BASE / clear came along it all but stopped single stage lacquer / and enamel. I'm here to help as best as I can |

The objective is body work and fresh paint to keep the amount of rust and corrosion to a minimum, seeing as how it lives outside now. Scratches and dents will not bother me, I just do not want to have a large chunk of fresh paint come off from a minor inpact. Any suggestions on other types of durable finishes will be appreciated. |
