| Im looking at purchasing my 1st harley, Im kinda leaning more to a fatboy or heritage. I plan on putting some apes and aftermarket wheels on whatever I get. Can any knowledgeable guys help me and point out some key differences between the 2. Also what do I need to look for when buying either one of these used? Im looking to stay under 12k.. |

Similiar bike.
Fat Boy has solid rims, different front and rear fender and set up for turn signals heritage usually spoke rims, different front and rear fender then fatboy, comes with windshield, saddlebags, and front light bar. heritage mimics the look of an old panhead, while the fatboys have a "newer" look with the fenders. 2002 is the best year of twin cam 88 for either, 2001 is good. Just look at the bike in general_ mileage, any rust, scraped parts, etc |

Quoted: Im starting to see a pattern with folks giving praise to the 2002 models... Whats special about them In 2003, the mothership started cutting corners with regard to internal parts. 2003 and later models had poorer bearing, larger crankshaft tolerances, and some other odds and ends. |

Both are Softails, both use the same front end as the touring Models with one disc rather than 2, in the price range you are looking at you will probably encounter the TC88 with a 5 speed or the TC 96 with a 6 speed (this change happened in 06 or 07), both the 88 and the 96 in the Softails use the B engine it is an internally balanced engine, the FLSTC comes with saddle bags, a sissy bar, very comfortable seats, mini apes, passing lamps, laced wheels and a detachable windshield. I have a 2010 FLSTC with 23,000 miles on it. I also have a 2002 Electra Glide Ultra Classic with 22,000 miles on it this Summer. I prefer the non balanced engines used in everything but the Softail, the balanced engines are very smooth but give up some of the HD traits (they are so smooth they almost seem sterile) its not bad but I do prefer the non balanced engine in myFLHTCUI. If you pick up an 88 with 5 speed it is a good idea to have the cam chain tensioners upgraded at around 30,000 miles (this runs about $1100.00 in this area). The Softails have the least amount of ground clearance of any of the Harleys with the exception of the Sportster Super Low I don't have an issue with this however some may. |
| I just bought a few months ago, started looking at the fat bob, fat boy & soft tail. I was in KC MO waiting for a flight & had time to kill so off to the HD shop I went. The guy there spent over an hour w/ me going over & pulling different models & year bikes out for a side by side comparison. He did this knowing the whole time I wasn't gonna buy. Anyway mama is always figured in, so for me the Road King was just so much more bike for another $2k. I'm glad somebody took the time w/ me, it's all about what is right for you. |

Handlebars can be changed as well as windshields, fenders, wheels, footboards, etc..
You probably won't notice a difference riding either of the two. Both are 800 pound gorillas. As many bikes that are on the market currently, you might have some luck finding something with a new wheel on it already. Changing handlebars is relatively easy as long as they aren't much longer or shorter than what you are replacing. |

Thanks fellas.. Really useful stuff. I was looking at the street glides and the RK originally I thought both was out of my price range, then the wife told me that she didnt want to spend over x amount... Road Kings are back in the mix now :) If your going to the Touring Bikes skip the RK and go to the Electra Glide. Make this easy on your self, pick up an 02 EG Ultra do the cam chain tensioner at 30 K and enjoy the bike. |

If you want to be in the wind on most days and put on the shield when you hit the longer roads, the RK is the way to go. You can still add a top box and make it like the EG, but it doesn't have the tunes, ass warmer, beverage holder, nose picker, etc................ |

The '02s are the first year of the better Delphi fuel injection, and the last year for the better crank bearings. |

If your bike has had good upkeep you need to start thinking about the chain tensioner upgrade at around 30,000 miles (some fail sooner and some don't fail for a very long time) if you take the chance and it fails it takes some very expensive items with it. If you have a good Dealer talk with the guys in back that work on them, the guys up front just want to sell you more shit. |
