I've decided to fix up my old 99 F150. It has always been parked outside, and while it is mechanically excellent, I never cared about how it looks and it shows.

So what is involved in detailing it myself or should I pay a detail place to do it? I've heard about a clay bar or using an orbital sander, but not sure if they are mutually exclusive or what.

It really depends on how dirty it is and how clean you want it. Most detail shops only charge a hundred bucks (or so) to do a complete detail. After adding up all of the products and time in the project It might be worth your time to just pay a shop to do it.

+1.

If you just want to shine it up a little and make it look nice for as cheap as possible, I'd just do a wash, clay, and wax.  The clay you buy will usually come with wax anyways, so you don't need to buy a bunch of different items.  You could just do a simple wash and wax, but claying really does make a big difference.  I haven't made myself spend the money on a dual action polisher yet, but that will be my next step.
