So the key fobs on my 4runner quit working. Both of them. At the same time. Also, as an extra added bonus, I found out that both of my keys dont work in the doors. Yeah, both of them...found this out at lunch with my wife and 7 mo old daughter at IHOP, came out and couldn't get into my ride. Nice, eh?
Called a cab and a tow truck, had 'em tow it to the nearest dealer. They haven't diagnosed the keyfob problem yet, but their explanation on the keys themselves was that since they've worn so much from being used in the ignition, they are now unable to work on the doors. Sounds lame to me, but what do I know? Anybody have an explanation for both fobs to fail at the same time? ETA, FWIW 2003 4Runner Limited, 4x4, V8 |

I'd guess on the Fobs is that something in the vehicle's lock system failed. I can't see both batteries going bad at the exact same time. Do you ever use the keys in the door locks? If they never get used they could have stuck. I've freed up a passenger side lock with lube and gentle twisting back and forth. Some newer vehicles don't have a passenger lock. Did you try using the key in the rear lock? The key should override the electric locks. Are the keys duplicates? Was the ignition lock changed and the door locks not rekeyed? Let us know what the problems were. I'm curious. |

No passenger side lock, just driver's side and rear hatch. I used both a duplicate and an original key on both locks, i was stranded at the IHOP so no silicone or wd40 handy but tried like hell to wiggle the keys, to no avail.
I have never tried the keys in the doors, so my guess is that the keys are worn...the dealer cut a new one from the VIN number and it works in the doors fine. The service guy called a minute ago, he says that they are thinking that the receiver crapped out...they have to order the part from Canada, and it's $732... . Furthermore, there is a small chance that the ecu might be malfuntioning and cause the receiver to quit working...new ecu, $964 |

Can they get a used receiver? It may have to be reprogrammed but it should be cheaper than a new one. Ask them if they will install a used receiver that you provide and program it. Search here. http://www.car-part.com/ put your numbers in, look for "computer box not engine", then Select, "theft locking". Verify all numbers and information. Good luck. |
