Got a friend deploying to Afghanistan in a few weeks. He has not told me where he is going yet. There are some things I'm curious about but wont/havent asked yet. What should he expect? I know it's tough to answer some of these questions not knowing where/job duties/etc.
Is everyone assigned to a base w/perimiter security and then mainly leave the base for patrols? operations? If he's traveling by humvee every day, on average, how often will his convoy experience IED's? Is this something that "could" happen or is it common enough that it will happen? Is it possible to go to Iraq/AF and not fire a shot in "self defense" ? Is air support common or more common just as a medical evac? Are we caught up with equipment/accessory issues (vertical grips, optics, etc)? How much of a delay is there with receiving mail? a few weeks? Are there many civilian contractors on base or in the field? Are MRE's still common for everyday food or is it just for in the field? Thanks all !!! |

No, sometimes, and sometimes. If he's traveling by humvee every day, on average, how often will his convoy experience IED's? Is this something that "could" happen or is it common enough that it will happen?
It's something that could happen. You only know when it actually does happen. Is it possible to go to Iraq/AF and not fire a shot in "self defense" ?
Yes Is air support common or more common just as a medical evac?
Yes Are we caught up with equipment/accessory issues (vertical grips, optics, etc)?
This need to be asked in a better way. Who is 'we'? A lot of units can not use anything that is not issued. How much of a delay is there with receiving mail? a few weeks?
We (at KAF) get stuff about a 1.5 weeks after it's send out in the states. May be longer for FOBs and COPs. Are there many civilian contractors on base or in the field?
Yes Are MRE's still common for everyday food or is it just for in the field?
Yes, depends if you can get to a DFAC. |
