Im Active duty Army National Guard stationed in ND.  And the other day my neighbor came over and he told me that the place he works just got a contract for making Kevlar panels for the MRAP.  Today he got some kevlar samples from his work to show me.  The kevlar is 34 layers thick, and looks like it is an inch or so thick..so it should be some kick ass protection.  The original call was for 40 a month but it just got bumped up to 85.  Needless to say, this guy is probably looking at some overtime now. Looks like the Military is pressing for as many as they can get.  Well i just thought i would share some information about this new truck.

Man you have no idea how crazy it is getting with these MARP vehicles. I have had the pleasure of crawling around the different models and must say they are pretty bad ass man.

My brother is going over again to patrol for IEDs and they told him that he wont get one because the visibility is poor.  Well in my opinion i would rather have poor visibility than getting injured in a hummer when one goes off.

What's an MRAP? Is it the Cougar?

I was with TF Trailblazer 2 years ago. We had buffalos, meerkats, huskies and RG-31s.

I remember seeing a funny looking shrunk-down version of the buffalo. It was painted white and driven around by contractors/UN diplomats.

Are you sure he was talking about MRAP/Cougar?  Those are great for route clearance patrolling.

Maybe he was referring to the M1117 ASV, which does have poor close in visibility.

The politics of the MRAP is INSANE.  As an Army unit in MNF-W we have stuff provided by both the Army and the USMC.  As of right now the only Cougars i.e. MRAP's you see in theater are USMC property.  The Army as usual is behind the power curve on this.

I just signed for a another Cougar yesterday, brand new and sweet.  Visibility is not what is is in the RG, but far more protective.  A HUMVEE isn't even in the discussion.  Anyone who thinks a HUMVEE has better sight lines than a Cougar has a screw loose.

I am an encouraging all my PL's to try the Cougar in the lead and only use RG's if we absolutely must.  The MRAP is the bomb.

How extensive is their fielding over there right now (not very wide I presume)? Looks like much better protection than the HMMWV...

What the Ford aspire is to the up armored HMMWV , The Uparmored M114 HMMWV is to the cougar.
