Got this from one of my friends on a different board... From the latest Army Times Lieutenant General Vines (Deputy Commander, Iraq) has issued an order that everyone that Blogs on the Internet WILL inform their Chain of Command of their online activities at least quarterly. This will apply to ARFCOM as forums are also covered by this order. Failure to comply is punishable by UCMJ as this is a puniative order. "But I'm not Army!" Doesn't matter. If you are assigned to Iraq, and you are covered by UCMJ, this order applies to you. "What am I supposed to do again?" On a quarterly basis you are required to ensure that your chain of command is aware that you are actively posting on ARFCOM. "What is my Chain of Command doing with this information?" Hopefully nothing. Actually they are supposed to review your posting for OPSEC violations. On a quarterly basis they are required (COMMANDERS WILL) report to their O-8 level command on the numbers of Soldiers / Sailors / Airmen / Marines who are WebBlogging. "Are you going to tattle on me if I don't" Don't Ask Don't Tell applies. Sticky maybe? |

Not really. OPSEC is indeed an important issue. Granted, arfcommers in Iraq are intelligent enough not to post information that violates OPSEC, but the average Serviceman is not. Countless Servicemen got bagged last year for divulging troop movements, mission details, KIA and WIA stats, etc over the internet, via satellite phones and land lines. You should see some of the info these idiots passed to their family, wives and G/F's...Someone has to police the idiots. Unfortunately, we all have to suffer as a result..... |
A big +1. There are sites that are blocked for various reasons already, and there are means in place to restrict access for periods of time as needed. OPSEC is covered by the UCMJ and CENTCOM General Orders. Posting official information on the Internet is already prohibited. I have not heard of any specific policy or order restricting the personal activities of servicemembers in Iraq from blogs, forums, BBSs, etc. |
