What's the longest you have been deployed for (as a Ranger)? I heard that they have shorter rotations than 11b etc. Is that true?

First... define "Ranger".
Ranger tabbed or Ranger in a Battalion (even though he's never been through the course)? Anyway, I digress becuase I'm guessing you mean someone serving in the Ragnar Regiment. Typically deployments are... nope, not gonna tell you and neither should anyone else. But they do deploy and it is a high operations tempo unit. For full disclosure: no, I'm not a Ragnar, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night... Oh yeah, I'm posting this from 30,000k feet (www.gogoinflight.com) |

seriously, last time i checked the deployment length for ranger rotation were not classified or very sensitive, since they havent changed in quite a long time. opsec is great, but opsec nazis are annoying. OPSEC Nazi? Ok fuck knuckle (told ya'll I'd take it for the rolodex). Hi let me introduce myself, those annoying "SAEDA" briefs you get from time to time, I give them. When it comes to specific units, with specific time lines (yes generic can be specific), at specific locations (home or deployed) that is classified and yes that is sensitive and no you don't need to talk about. You never hear about "A/1/75th Ranger Regiment is currently at NTC for training for an upcoming rotation to Afghanistan expected to be in March 2010..." now do you? There's a reason they fall under the Special Operations Command and that's about all you need to know with regards to how jealous and close hold their deployment orders are or aren't. So before you start tossing nazi bombs around you need to realize what is being asked here and of what organization, nuff said? Thanks |

if you wanna throw rocks go ahead, i know what the lengths are cause i get to play too. theres a huge difference between lengths and dates. i'm familier with your job, i'm also familier with what happens when someone else drops the ball, and some irate hadj shows up on your doorstop,,,,stateside. If someone had spent as much time on trying to figure out wtf happened there, as they do giving me briefs i'd be alot more inpressed. stating that someone is going to get in trouble, for anwsering a friends question, about a generic length of a hypothetical deployment is a little on the extreme side. As it is the vast majority of troop movements make the news, print or tv, so take it for what its worth. |

You want to start talking about my job you can better do it in PM and get your information a lot better, but I'll ask if you actually reported it? How did it happen? Bad OPSEC most likely is to blame. You just pointed it out with "someone else drops the ball..." think that proves my point. And bad OPSEC starts with generic questions on a non-secure form of communication. I didn't elude to OPs friend getting in trouble but I'll tell you that the blame for weakened security rests on everyone who starts with the "well I know this" or "I know that". But this was a bit more than generic deployment question, OP asked about Rangers and their deployment length. When you work in the community you don't talk about deployments and those that do find themselves with few friends and no job soon enough. Thankfully for the cowardly/stupid among them they have the Internet to hide their face (and no I'm not calling you a stupid coward) so many times they can say what they want and go back to their little celebrity world. So yes, I take OPSEC and classification rules seriously but there are reasons and if your story is accurate and true then you know why. |
