I am currently enrolled in an Aquatic entomology class here at school. For our lab work, instead of collecting or disecting bugs, we are required to fly tie bugs for fishing purposes. Each individual fly is graded on a 10 pt scale, and we make 6 a week. I am completley new to this art, and will be buying a kit to practice at night for class. I have been told the vise is one of the most important pieces of the kit. (It makes or breaks how quickly you learn). Can anyone here recommend a good vice for practice, and a specific kit from a certain outfitter (Cabelas, Orvis,Bass Pro, etc) for a beginner? Thanks. |

A vise definitely is important. Having a bad one that one hold a hook is frustrating. It comes down to what you want/can spend though. The cheap vises that come in a lot of kits usually aren't that good, and other than those, the only ones I've had experience with are some of the more expensive ones... which run in the hundreds of dollars. There should be a couple of good tying threads in the fly fishing subforum in the outdoor forum here. May want to check or post there as well. Entomology should be a pretty cool class. |
