how to set it up in general? (I don't care about a specific email client)

Do I need to buy/get something similar to a SSL for a HTTP site?

There are several software packages out there.  But the thing to remember is the person you are sending the encrypted email to needs a way to decrytp the email.  You can't just start encrypting your mail and shooting it out to everyone, they won't be able to decrypt it.  I think that's the biggest hurdle for email encryption*.

* as always I could be totally wrong.

Download PGP Desktop.
Create public/private keys.
Send public key to your buddies.
Use PGP to encrypt/decrypt your messages. You can also use Enigmail through Thunderbird.
