I need some help.  My laptop is a Dell Latitude D610, on XP Pro.  Everything's been great and this thing has totally lived up to its expectancies given how old it is and how much I paid for it (it was a refurb from the Dell Outlet, I got it back in 2005 I think).  I stayed up till about midnight playing around online, surfing Arfcom and whatnot, shut it down and threw it in my bag for work.

I got to work this morning, turned it on, the backlight display would power on for about five seconds then go dark.  I could still see the outlines of text and the XP start up screen, but the display was very dark.  I took the keyboard out and rechecked the connections for the display, tried two or three times, no go.  I let it sit for like 15 minutes while I was doing other things, powered it up, and the display works but it's kinda sketchy, the backlighting flickers a bit every now and then, and if there's any coincidence, I noticed sometimes I can make it flicker by pressing on the case beside the touch pad, like if I'm resting my palms to type something.

Any ideas?  I've kinda grown attached to this thing, and within reason don't mind putting a little money in it to get it right, but if it costs too much I'll just set this one to the side and buy a new Latitude.

I did some research via Google, and it looks like my problem may be with the LCD inverter.  I bought one off EBay for $14, it's cheap enough to try.

keep us informed on how this works out for you, i run into this several times a year.
i typically just repl the screen(used) as a complete unit and be done with it.

Will do.  I might even take pictures and stuff.

I've gone to my netbook for back up, and this small screen is killing my eyes.  I gotta get my laptop working again.

do you have another monitor that you can hook it up too? Might help withthe screen size for the time being.

At home I do, it's one of those monster CRT displays I'd have to dig out of storage, but it would help for the time being.

At work though, I'm SOL.  This tiny screen is usable, especially if I turn the brightness down quite a bit, but damn I want my laptop back.

I installed a new/used LCD inverter, and my screen seems to be stable, but I'm getting some weird electrical noise/buzz when I run the brightness full up.  If I leave it at about half way, everything's cool.

I think I might end up replacing the entire display just for the hell of it, or it may be time to start searching for a replacement laptop.  I dunno yet.

Well, it worked okay for a couple hours, then dead again.
