I have a Brother MFC240 all-in-one printer, and I am going to shoot it soon.

The damn thing eats thru printer cartridges like candy, even though I don't print but 20 pages a year.

I never print in color, and those little shits just empty themselves automatically.

And then, I go look on Brother's site, and it says to use up the ink six months after you open it!  The damn color set is something like $50, and the black is $30.   Fuck this piece of shit!!!

So, what "all in one unit" out there is under $200, has long lasting ink, and has cheap refills?

If you don't use color, then go with a laser all-in-one.

Even if it costs you more up front, it will cost you less in the end.

I went laser ten years ago, and have saved a ton of money on printing ever since.

All the inkjets use a lot of ink.  Go laser.

Photo printer + CIS system = win.

I had an Epson R300 with a CIS (Continuous Ink Supply) system, but the printer ultimately died (after several resets of the built-in "you need a new printer because we've counted the sheets you've printed and decided you've gotten your money's worth").

I now have an Epson R1400, with another CIS system.

#79 Epson cartridge at Staples:  $24 for 11ml cartridge.  $2.18 / ml.

CIS system from www.inkjetfly.com = $124.xx shipped, for 600ml.  $.21 / ml.  You can buy systems for roughly half that, but most of the photography boards I visited spoke highly of the ijf.com ink.  As my GF wants to print a bunch of pictures, I thought the extra $ would be worth it.

At those prices, the $124 I spent on aftermarket ink bought me the same quantity as $1,308 worth of ink cartridges from Staples.  My ink costs literally 10% of what OEM's charge.  Now the GF can print all the photos she wants, I can print documentation, the kiddo can print off coloring books, etc without me seeing $ on every sheet of paper.

This is my only experience with Brother printers, and it is a bad one.

Am I going to have problems with future Brother products, or did I just learn the hard way about inkjet printers?

You learned the hard way about the economic concept called "loss leader."

Buy a lazer printer.

I have had same issues with all-in-one by HP since 1996...
My relatives love them sense they only need to buy one thing.
Problem with all-in-ones is they try to do everything for everyone and end up doing nothing well for any-one.
Like the F-111.
I have a separate scanner and printer and everything just fucking works with no special software or other jump-thru-hoop-shit from the vendor.

But do you have a seperate copier as well?

That the scanner, and printer gets used more than the fax, which I never use.
