I just re-did my entire system, and it was a giant slog.  I used to use imaging software so I could create a master image and then when major updates came out, I would update the image files.

Is there a free version of something like Norton Ghost or Drive Image for creating disk images for backing up?  I dont mind paying Norton, just curious if there is something better.

I use CloneZilla to make backup images for the PCs in my lab.  Works great and it's free.  I save the images to a network drive over an SSH connection.  IIRC it also supports saving to a USB disk.
