In our department our IT people can obtain control of any computer with
the click of the mouse and authorization of the current user.  Is this
software available to the public.  Here is the reason.

My parents are in their 70's and not very computer literate.  I live between 500
to 1000 miles depending on the time of year.  I get calls all the time to fix
problems on their computer.  I would like to take control of their computer
to fix it.

Just wondering.

Thanks

Depending on what flavor of Windows they are running, it's probably already installed.

It's called VNC.

I have no idea how to set it up though.

I'd suggest a title change to Remote Control Software and youmight get extra input as the spyware title is a bit misleading.

Anyway...I'd take a look at Virtual Network Computing (VNC).  There are a few different flavors of it.

another vote for www.logmein.com

I use it on my desktop at home––works great for time when I need to email myself something from the computer at home.  The free version is fine.  You can pay for versions that will let you transfer files and stuff.

I've used RDP (on WIndows - but not secure) VNC (pretty good but slow) and Remote Administrator (RADMIN) which was the fastest and secure (encrypted).

RADMIN was per seat charge, I really liked it.

In windows xp, control panel, Performance and Maintenance, system, there is a remote assistance tab.

Should be able to use this.

You will hopefully have to setup their router (they are behind a router and firewall, aren't they?) to allow access from your system to theirs. Make sure to limit access to your IP (or range of IPs if you are on dynamic).

You may also want to do the same with remote access to their router so that you can get in and turn it on and off when needed.

Set up VPN to create a secure tunnel to their home network and then use remote assistance, RDP, or VNC.

logmein.com for quick and dirty access, or VNC if you have a little more time or need to view it on a android device (like me).

We use Ultra VNC Single Click (SC).
