I need to build a computer and need it to run a website I own. I'd prefer a windows system and don't want to spend a fortune building it. Can anyone help recommend me some parts? How do I choose the correct case and other parts? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Better yet, if you know the exact system you would build for this just let me know what parts I would need and I'll pick them up.

Specs will depend on how much load you expect on your website.

Are you going to colocate your box at a data center?

I don't know jack about IIS so I'll let someone else handle that one.  I would recommend Apache over IIS however.

is there a reason you're buying hardware instead of paying $20 a month for hosted services?

Then what's this talk about running a website?  If you're doing video or image processing, you'll want a decent budget.

So you want a work station, not a server?

I would recommend you get a system from someone like Systemax - they will build to order for you.

That's how unfamiliar I am with the whole computer thing. I just need a system that will run multiple programs at once, the computer I'm using to run software on right now is way too slow when using multiple programs.

I have a bit of money to spend building it, I don't want to spend a ton but have a few bucks to spend.

Then you need to ask yourself a few questions on what you will need.

What OS are you using ?  Most graphic artists use a MAC.

How much disk space will you need.. Will this need to be a RAID system or and you fine with just a mirror data backup solution?
Since your working with Adobe products, find a video card that is suited for their applications and it will take some of the load of the CPU(s).

Off the cuff..a dual, tri, or quad processor will work. AMD is cheaper and Intel is the fastest but costs more.

I'd like to stick with a windows based system because I'm not a graphics designer and basically I'm just sick of using my 8" laptop for everything. Basically I just need some recommendations as to what to buy. TigerDirect has a lot of stuff but I don't want to buy stuff that isn't compatible. Should I stick with XP or go with Vista? I don't know.

I like Vista, but you need a fast Dual + system for it to work well. XP you'll max out memory at just under 4 gigs. Vista will support as high as the Mobo will support.

Also look at newegg dot com for systems. They have user reviews on everything.

Start with the mobo and work from there. Read what type of memory it takes and pick that. Then look at the CPU and go from there and so on.

Also remember to stay within the processor maker family. If you use Intel, then you have to use a Intel mobo, same as with AMD.

I use a HP 22 inch LCD (W2207) . Its the best LCD display I have seen yet and it rotates if I need it too :-)

After spending $1300 on a Dell and having the MOBO die on me twice during 15 months I'll never give Dell another $1 of my money. Now I'm off to look at MOBOs.

Not sure about that HP dvd drive doesnt give much info in the specs, I don't think it'll burn dual layer don't know if that matters to you. For another $10 you can get the WD Black 500 gig hard drive w/ 32meg cache it'll be a bit faster. I'd also consider stepping up to the 9600 or 9800 series for the video card. If your overclocking get an aftermarket cooler, if not oc'ing the included one will suffice but they are crappy.

In reality I only wanted to spend $500 or so on the computer system which turned out to be $925 incl. the monitors. Then I was at Best Buy looking at the 22" monitors to see how big they were in person and I saw a LG 32" 1080p TV for $530 and I'm going back to buy that in the morning.
