One of my 500 gb WD ext HD went TU

How do you rank the reliability of the major vendors?

I have 2 maxtors and a Lacie that have never given me a problem, but want to go with whoever is considered best.

I've got a 150gb "my book" WD external that's been serving me well for about 2 years now.

I see they have TB drives now for pretty cheap.

the WD that died is a "my book", fairly new also.  started clunking a week ago, now is toast.

all the brands are relatively inexpensive, so I want to go with whatever is built like a tank, and has a low failure rate.

replace the drive itself (assuming the power supply and usb interface still work... you might want to verify the interface type (IDE vs SATA).

I just went to a solid state - or flash drive of 400MB.  The moving parts seemed to eventually be an issue.  they had TB models, but the reviews suggested they suffered from too much heat.

FWIW it's a Fujitsu.  Waiting on delivery

How often do you replace your replace your external drives?
I use a 500g for a back up for all my music and picture files.
It's about 2 years old.
Should I replace it and have a back up for my back up?
If I loose the wife's pictures, I'm dead.

did the hd go bad or did the enclosure go bad?

the enclosures seem to fail alot before the drive itself.  take the drive out and hook it up through a usb covertor, or if you know how to mount it try it inside the pc

Optical medium.  Burn some DVDs.

External HDD aren't really what I would call "backup".  Just extra storage space.

I predict that there will a small business opportunity for this in the future. Lots of digital pictures lost on drives. Negs you can store for decades. Digital data is only as good as what it's saved on.

Sounds like a plan.
The DVD's last...forever or close to it?

30 years, give or take (if I remember right).  They degrade over time and the longer they sit, the more chances you have of corrupt sectors on the disk.

Did I mention Seagate?

I just assumed from the clunking noise it was the drive itself, but I will try it thru another enclosure just to be sure.

The data (pics / music) is still on the main HD in the PC, and another PC so I was just being re-redundant.

well in that case clicking would be the drive.  it wouldn't hurt to hook it up to the pc to see if anything changed.

thats great that you had an actual backup
