This has finally gotten annoying enough I am asking for help. Over the last few days my browsers (both Firefox and IE) will randomly jump back a few pages from the current one I am on. Sometimes only one, but has gone back as many as four. I have ran virus scans and nothing. Firewall is in place on router with security enabled so I don't think it's been hacked, and it isn't messing with the other computers on my home network. It's not doing anything destructive but it is annoying as heck, especially when I am trying to go somewhere or post something and suddenly I am backwards instead of where I want to be. Glitch maybe? Or is there something in the settings I can change or look at? |

No, nothing. I've been working a lot this past week so other than downtime at night and to access my job orders for the next day I haven't done much on it. I have run Spybot, Avast, and just downloaded and ran Malwarebytes (which did catch 2 registry changes). Three (noticeable) things have been happening over the last few days (no earlier than Monday): 1. USB mouse and touchpad not working right. I could click on desktop icons, but not on the Start button or select anywhere within a window to type or icons. I had to go into control panel to the mouse and select the type and enter then it would take. Did this for a day or so then it started doing it more frequently. Went to Logitech's website and downloaded the most recent driver for the mouse and (knock on wood) so far it has not had anymore issues. 2. Browser windows going backwards. Very frustrating and annoying, but not a real "issue". Still happening for some reason. 3. Can not print correctly. I am running a Linksys WPS54G and it has always worked fine. I can run through my desktop no problems (hardwired through router). It started accepting the print request, then would just put out a blank paper from the printer. The only thing that prints is if I request the print server settings via the BI-Admin software. Anything else trying to print from the laptop just produces a blank page (from browsers, Word, notepad, etc.). I even tried connecting the laptop to the router with a Cat5e and it still wouldn't print. Desktop prints with no issues. I just finished resetting all passwords and settings on the router and print server, but still a no go. Looks like it is something in Windows on the laptop but to my knowledge nothing has or should have been changed. I am the only user. |

Quoted: are you able to ping the print server? any new firewalls installed? I just tried to ping and was successful. I haven't installed or made changes to any firewall within the last month. I defrag'd and chkdsk'd today to see if that would change anything, and so far no differences. The most frustrating thing is not being able to print. I can print the print server settings and the test page from the HP printer assistant, but cannot print from anything else including the test page from the printer properties window or the test page from the print server install/setup program (which both print the same info, the Windows XP settings and print drivers info). |

The other poster suggested the backspace key (which in most browsers sends you "back" one page when pressed.)
The flakey / new touchpad or mouse driver may have a backspace function bound to a button, when accidentally hit might make the browser go backwards. I might try checking settings in the new drivers and seeing if there is any backspace function bound to a button elsewhere. Try disabling the touchpad completely and see if the problem goes away. You could be bumping or "gesturing" with it to cause the backspace function to go. Also, touchpads can and do simply go bad. You might have one that is screwed up enough physically to cause problems. |

I have the touchpad set to disable when the mouse is plugged in. I can unplug the mouse and the touchpad becomes active again, but still the same problems exist. Backspace key checks out okay. It just gets a wild hair and starts jumping. So far (knock on wood) today is the first day it hasn't done it and I've been online for about a half hour. I can click "submit" for this post (for example) and instead of going forward and posting it will jump backwards. I click the forward button and it will take me back to my edit, but hadn't posted. It will do it without touching the keyboard or mouse. Last night it actually did it in a Windows Explorer window also (first non-internet problem). |
