I need a netbook recommendation. I will be carrying it during international travel, so I need small, light, great battery life, good screen, usable keyboard. It will be mainly for email and net surfing. Should have a MSWORD compatible text editor so I can copy and paste info from the net or read MSWORD documents. Would also like to be able to view docs in PDF or HTML format. Doesn't need a CD drive and only needs a modest size hard drive. Would like it to have a modem for celular internet, but not an absolute necesity. Light is more important than small, since my main concern is shrinking baggage allowance in international air travel.

| I have an ASUS N10J-c which is higher end netbook, lower end notebook and it's great. I really love it, get about 6 hours of battery, LED backlit is nice and bright, plus it has lots of features like Bluetooth, HDMI, and new models suppose to have cellular network integration... |

My boss bought a Dell Mini 9 a few weeks ago. I'm impressed. The battery lasts for-freakin-ever. The cord and transformer are practically the same size as the netbook.
The one thing that drives me batty is the keyboard. The quote key is moved from the home key row to the row below. I looks like the next size up, the Mini 10, has the quote key in the right place. It runs Ubuntu, so if you are using Office a lot, you may want to make sure Open Office is compatible with what you're doing. The Mini 10 runs XP. |

How do the ASUS N10J-c and the Samsung NC10 compare?
I am as far from a computer nerd as they come. I am use to the XP operating system. I have read that netbooks work better with Linox? Should I stick with what I know - XP - or is going to Linox relatively painless? |

Should I stick with what I know - XP....? Yes. Quoted:
...or is going to Linox relatively painless? Probably not. A typical netbook will run XP just fine. Decide on your priorities and go from there: 8.9" or 10.2" screen? How important is size (mostly a difference in thickness among netbooks with the same screen size)? How important is weight? (although we're probably talking about a pound at most between the lightest and the heaviest) How important is battery life? (bigger battery = more heavier) Personally, I think battery life is the key to a usable netbook. IMHO, the Asus 1000HE is the best bang for your buck at the moment––mostly for the killer battery life (7-8 hours, real-life usage) and also the "chicklet" keyboard. Comes with wireless-N and bluetooth. One of the heavier netbooks and definitely not the prettiest. I'm typing on one right now. Price is ~$375 The just-released Samsung N110 supposedly has similar battery life and is reportedly built nicer. Price is ~ $475 ETA - the "netbook" category is evolving very quickly––there will definitely be something better on the market six months after you make your purchase. OTOH, they're cheap enough that you don't have to care too much. |
