Last Wed my wife went to turn on our desktop and got the following message:
Error loading operating system
This had happened about 4 years ago, so I thought it was probably the same problem. At the time, I took it to a local guy who had it running again in a few hours, but said the only thing he could see was that a few of the OS files were missing. I put in the OS cd (Win XP SP1) and ran the fixboot option (which said there were some files missing or corrupted and it fixed them) but it would boot really slow. I then ran the reinstall option to repair and it took a long time, but didn't fix anything. When I was finally able to get the task manager opened it said there were 36 processes running and it was maxing out the CPU. The processes in question all began with a prefix "ash" and could not be terminated. There were 3 or 4 of them. Reason I am thinking it was a bug is I went to turn on my laptop to check for answers/help online and got this message: PBR...done
! PBR and if you hit any key: [XLDR] (something else, I can't remember) ATA
Near as I can figure something came down and got into my home network and hit the files. Everything was working the night before, and I am running Avast and it is up to date. Anyone heard or know of something like this, and what options besides a reformat to fix? I am actually on a public computer right now since both of mine are down. I did take them to a local guy (different from one above) who said he was checking the hardware (memory, cd/dvd drives, processor) for problems. Wouldn't this be a software (or hard drive) issue? I am just wondering if this guy is being thorough or is lost, since he had them for two days and he's only touched the desktop PC. |
| I was thinking of maybe getting new drives with an OS installed and just copying everything over (after giving each a good scan to hopefully catch everything so I don't transfer a bug to the new drive). Doing a format/reinstall isn't really an option right now as the desktop (wife's) has a lot of stuff she wants to keep that hasn't been backed up lately (pictures and stuff like that). |
